DIY deep root watering system for potted plants

A solution for making it easier to locate and fill a DIY deep watering system for potted plants.

Tools needed
  • Sander
  • Drill
  • Electrical tape
  • Utility knife

I took and sanded the top edge off of the cap of a water bottle and then I could attach another water bottle with the bottom cut off of it to create a funnel. I used a one liter pop bottle buried to deep water my potted tomato plants. Most pop bottles and water bottles use the same diameter cap and thread type.

First I screwed the lid tightly to my 1 liter bottle. Then I used my belt sander to sand away the top section of the cap. You could use any type of sander available.

Be careful not to sand too much off of the top of the lid because you need all of the threads that you can get. Just keep testing the threads while sanding slowly. Through trial and error you will get to the perfect point. Once you've sanded down to the bottle top you're finished.

Now just thread the two bottles together and wrap with some electrical tape to make a tough connection.  I've also learned to take some electrical tape and go over the connection point of the two bottles to make it a solid connection.

You could also just bypass the cap and tape the two bottles together using electrical tape but its not as strong as the cap and tape method.

Next just plant your bottle inside your pot. Fill with water and your done !
